The latest name to emerge as a candidate for the Eagles’ head-coaching vacancy is Gruden. But not Jon Gruden.

The Eagles are expected to seek permission from the Bengals on Monday to talk to their offensive coordinator, Jay Gruden, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

Jay is the younger brother of former Raiders and Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden, who has been mentioned as a potential candidate to coach the Eagles as well. Jon Gruden has said all his focus is on continuing to work at ESPN as the color commentator on Monday Night Football, although Jon hasn’t stated unequivocally that he will not consider a return to coaching.

The 45-year-old Jay has strong credentials: In two seasons as the Bengals’ offensive coordinator he has had a lot of success with rookie quarterback Andy Dalton running his offense, and prior to working in Cincinnati he spent six seasons as an assistant on his brother’s staff in Tampa. Jay also has a total of 10 seasons of head coaching experience in Arena Football (much of it while moonlighting during Buccaneers offseasons), and in addition to serving as an Arena Football head coach he was an Arena Football quarterback who was so successful that when the Arena Football League celebrated its 20th anniversary by naming its all-time top 20 players, Gruden came in at No. 4.

That the Eagles are planning to seek permission from the Bengals on Monday suggests that they don’t anticipate having their coaching search wrapped up this weekend — or that they want any candidates who are dragging their feet to know that the Eagles are prepared to move on to other candidates.
