The Bengals today signed two draft choices, DT Devon Still of Penn State and WR Marvin Jones of California.

            Still (6-5, 305) was a second-round choice, 53^rd overall. He was a first-team Associated Press All-American last season and also was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year while serving as a Nittany Lions co-captain. Over his final two Penn State seasons, he had 8.5 sacks and 27.0 tackles-for-loss.

Jones (6-2, 200) was the second of three Bengals selections in the fifth round, 166^th overall.  Jones finished his four-year Cal career with 156 catches for 2270 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he burnished his draft stock with strong performances at the Senior Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine. 

The Bengals now have signed four of the club’s 10 draft choices. Previously signed were the team’s other two fifth-rounders, CB Shaun Prater of Iowa and S George Iloka of Boise State.

The Bengals today signed CB Shaun Prater and S George Iloka, who both were fifth-round choices by Cincinnati in last month’s 2012 draft.

            Prater (5-10, 190; Iowa) was the 156th overall selection. He played in 48 games with 35 starts over four seasons at Iowa, posting 171 tackles, seven INTs and 19 additional passes defensed. He had a 24.7-yard avg. on INT returns, two of which he carried for TDs.

            Iloka (6-4, 225; Boise State) was the 167th pick in the draft. He played 53 games with 45 starts over four seasons for Boise State, with 232 tackles, seven INTs and 17 additional passes defensed.

Jacob Bell has retired, according to Yahoo! Sports.

For many of you, I'm sure your first response is: Who?

Bell was a backup guard for the Cincinnati Bengals. Well, sort of. Bell signed a one-year, $890,000 deal (included $65,000 signing bonus) with the Bengals as a free agent on April 6. So, he was on the team for 32 days. I'm not sure that really qualifies you for being an ex-Bengal.

Some suggested that Bell decided to retire after the Bengals drafted Kevin Zeitler in the first round. But Bell had to know the Bengals were going to draft a guard early when he joined the team. I even called him "a safety net" when he signed with the Bengals.

Bell, though, was a starter for 100 of his 109 career NFL games with the Titans and Rams and possibly wasn't happy with becoming a backup. It's still stunning to think of someone turning down $890,000 because they couldn't handle a demotion.

The Bengals today acquired two players on waivers, G Chris Riley from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and DT Vaughan Meatoga from the Washington Redskins.

            Riley (6-4, 304; Illinois State) is classified as a first-year NFL player in 2012. He signed with the Bengals as a college free agent prior to 2011 training camp and was waived Sept. 3, after playing in all four preseason games. He was signed Oct. 5 to Tampa Bay’s practice squad, where he finished the season, and he was signed to the Bucs’ offseason roster on Jan. 3 of this year.

            Meatoga (6-1, 294; Hawaii) is a rookie. He was signed by Washington as a college free agent on May 3 and was waived by the Redskins yesterday.
