With Joel Rosario aboard for trainer Graham Motion and owner Team Valor International, 2011 Spiral Stakes and Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom today won the $10 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse in the UAE.
Animal Kingdom was forwardly placed and outside throughout, easily took the lead leaving the turn, and drew clear by three lengths.
The Dubai World Cup is the world's richest race on the world's richest day of racing--$27.5 million in purses covering eight races that attract horses from around the world. Animal Kingdom was one of three US horses entered in this year's World Cup.
Team Valor International was represented at Turfway March 23 on the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes undercard by Crop Report, winner of the Rushaway Stakes. This year's Rushaway was returned to Turfway's 2013 stakes schedule when Team Valor offered to sponsor the race as its first-ever sponsor. Team Valor and Motion also won the 2012 Spiral Stakes at Turfway with Went the Day Well.
Animal Kingdom was the first horse in history to win the Kentucky Derby without ever having run on dirt before that race. He is now the first horse from the USA to win the World Cup since the race moved from the dirt surface at Nad Al Sheba to the all-weather Tapeta surface at Meydan Racecourse, which opened in 2010.
Animal Kingdom is by the Brazilian-bred sire Leroidesanimaux out of the German-bred mare Dalicia. Last year an Australian stud farm bought controlling rights for his breeding career.
