Vice Mayor: Zero Public Safety Layoffs

(Cincinnati) -- A week ago, City Manager Milton Dohoney proposed balancing the budget by laying off 71 firefighters, and 66 police officers.  On Wednesday, Mayor Mark Mallory released a plan reducing those numbers to 53 in the fire department and 49 in police.  Now the Vice Mayor says by saving the jobs of another 13 firefighters, the City won't have to pay back a federal grant, and can keep all 40 of the new recruits.

Roxanne Qualls says that means the cuts the Mayor laid out Wednesday are kept, along with an expansion of the furloughs for supervisors, a reduction in Council members' budgets, and a cut to the City Clerk's office.

Qualls says she and Councilman Chris Seelbach have identified more than $607,000 in cuts that could go toward public safety positions.

The proposal will be introduced Thursday night, during a special public hearing on the budget, at the Duke Energy Convention Center.
